about

Thou who holds but owns not
sound poetry
from March to June 2020
collected by Adrienne Herr

The impetus behind this compilation was to emphasize the importance of materializing language through sound, specifically from March 2020. That orality and touch might be more intimately involved than we had realized, the voice being the touch of language.

Thank you to…
Marie Lea Lund for her drawings made in response to the recordings, that are the images for this compilation.
Miriam Kongstad for allowing her words to be used as the title.
TLTRPreß, Martin, and Kyra for their support in this endeavor.
All of the contributors who trusted me with their sounds.

- Adrienne Herr

[ NOTE: For the first week of its release, this compilation had a price tag, and collected profits were directed predominantly towards G.L.I.T.S. Inc. By now, the release has no price tag and any voluntary donations will go to TLTRPreß. We encourage you to donate to G.L.I.T.S. directly through their fundraiser here: www.glitsinc.org ]

Originally this compilation wasn't meant to have a price. The choice to raise funds with its release should not commodify the compilation, and thus qualm the consumer’s anxiety of giving without receiving, but rather answer to the necessity that all endeavors make material and symbolic alliance with real, systemic change that dismantles white supremacy and provides reparations to BIPOC people.

Its release on Bandcamp was on Juneteenth, the (only) day that Bandcamp was donating 100% of their profits to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Our portion of these profits was distributed between the POC contributors and G.L.I.T.S.' fund to buy a building for housing Black trans people recently released from Rikers Island. We chose this fund to emphasize a balance between local, basic needs, and national organizations. And to speak specifically to the material support of Black trans people during this administration, and always.

Sanna Helena Berger is an artist who works with installation, performance, text, sound and sculpture. Berger works on the axis of these definable mediums and resists possible commodification. She produces work which exists in a state of openness towards self-curatorial outcomes and outside of rigid institutional structures. These aim to repeal normative standards for contemporary cultural behaviour since Berger believes in practicing art that leads to continuous learning, opposes repetition and doesn’t differentiate the personal from the professional.

Zoe Brezsny is a poet based in New York. She co-runs the project space Gern en Regalia with Mario Miron. You can listen to the archives of her radio show at wfmu.org

Zoe Darsee is a poet and teacher based in Berlin. Alongside Nat Marcus, she is co-editor of TABLOID press, a textual platform intended to stimulate and integrate poetic environments within social communities. Recent collaborations include vocals for ambient/downtempo releases by DJ Paradise and Exael, forthcoming on vinyl.

Matthew Doyle is a media artist and educator living in Los Angeles. He has presented work at the Swiss Insitute, RECESS, MassArt, Hammer Museum, Human Resource, and Beton7. Jessica Rae Elsaesser is a complex system comprised of elements and relations. She is listening, reading, seeing, touching, writing, speaking, making, tending, connecting and reflecting in continuous interacting and simultaneous feedback loops between the internal and external environment. Her biography is ongoing.

Adrienne Herr is a poet whose work is interdisciplinary and cross-form, drawing from documentary and experimental poetics. Often using multiple media in the culmination of a text (including audio, exhibition and participatory performance) her work, in part, considers the document itself, critiquing and enacting the anxiety of its loss. Attentive to place and the construction of place, to collective means of imagining, her performances are both historical and transient.

Miriam Kongstad is a visual artist and choreographer based in Amsterdam and Berlin miriamkongstad.com

For this work, Miriam collaborated with Alexander Holm. Holm is a musician based in Copenhagen sensoriskv.co

Marie Lea Lund (b. 1991, DK) is an interdisciplinary artist and fashion designer. Her work is centred around alternative systems of fashion and its potential intersection with the history and practice of holistic care systems as it relates to the body, mind and spirit. Lund approaches spiritual care as a politicized practice in opposition to the patriarchal Western medicinal systems of today. Recently her work has been shown at Courrèges and Balenciaga. Lund had her first solo show ”Clothes for Healing” in 2019 at Gallery Sandy Brown, Berlin.

Nat Marcus / NM is a dancer, editor, and co-founder of TABLOID Press.

VI KHI NAO is the author of Sheep Machine (Black Sun Lit, 2018) and Umbilical Hospital (Press 1913, 2017), and of the short stories collection, A Brief Alphabet of Torture, which won FC2’s Ronald Sukenick Innovative Fiction Prize in 2016, the novel, Fish in Exile (Coffee House Press, 2016), and the poetry collection, The Old Philosopher, which won the Nightboat Books Prize for Poetry in 2014. Her work includes poetry, fiction, film and cross-genre collaboration. Her stories, poems, and drawings have appeared in NOON, Ploughshares, Black Warrior Review and BOMB, among others. She holds an MFA in fiction from Brown University, where she received the John Hawkes and Feldman Prizes in fiction and the Kim Ann Arstark Memorial Award in poetry.

Cecilie Nørgaard is a painter, writer, and performer, whose work evolves from the notion that making and looking at art is an empathic undertaking. She believes in sharing intimate experiences so as to promote the ability of assigning subjectivity to, and thus gaining intimacy with, other (states of) being(s). Art making is a practice of awareness and care and a way of forming relationships with what precedes.

zan de parry has been published variously in print and online. chapbooks vibraphone (brest press, detroit) hennie (tabloid, berlin) history, memory, love, america, syllogism (amateur, ohio) and the full-length austerity brunch (keith llc, austin/philadelphia) co-written with matthew hodges.

Matilda Tjäder works with text that is directed, performed, sounded, and sculpted into varying forms of media. Observing the interface between fictional and real scenarios, she often works in collaborative and conversational constellations. She co-runs a speculative fiction writing group based in London. Other recent collaborations include a research project with Asta Meldal Lynge and Nikhil Vettukattil and four-hand piano pieces composed together with Alexander Pierce. Since 2018 she’s been cultivating the Wishing for More cycle; a world-building project with a fictional persona as narrator; a self-acclaimed real estate hero aspiring to build an inter-dimensional theme park with gateways leading to different zones. Each episode in this cycle takes place in a new zone.
